Denver Households on Hook for $500 to Fund Migrant Welcome Mat

A recent report from the Common Sense Institute has unveiled staggering figures, indicating that Denver's well-intentioned efforts to support migrants may come at a significant cost to each household – a substantial $500, to be precise. This amount, comparable to the price of a new video game console or a lavish family dinner, highlights the financial strain the city is grappling with as it strives to provide services for incoming migrants.

The think tank's analysis suggests that Denver could potentially expend a remarkable $180 million by the conclusion of 2024, a figure that surpasses most individuals' financial aspirations. The report underscores that this expenditure doesn't even encompass all the funds and resources being utilized to support the migrant population throughout Colorado, likening it to attempting to fill a leaky bucket with taxpayer dollars.

In an effort to provide context, the report draws a parallel between the number of U.S.-born children in 2022 and the 3.2 million migrant encounters at U.S. borders in fiscal year 2023. With over 35,400 migrants arriving in Denver since January of the preceding year, the city appears to be inundated with newcomers, resembling a magnet attracting migrants like ants to a picnic.

Furthermore, the report highlights that costs are escalating as the city establishes new shelters and begins covering some migrants' rent. Notably, taxpayer money is being used for this purpose, creating a scenario where the city seems to be extending a welcoming gesture with a complimentary place to stay. This additional spending could amount to between $36.3 million and $39.1 million by the end of the year, potentially surging to $55.5 million by 2024 – a substantial sum that could be directed toward improving local infrastructure or public services for hardworking American citizens.

The report issues a cautionary note, urging policymakers and the public to carefully weigh the trade-offs before committing to such expenditures. It serves as a wake-up call for Denver and the entire nation, prompting a critical examination of whether we are truly prepared to shoulder the financial burden for migrants when there are pressing needs within our borders. The Common Sense Institute's report raises a red flag, emphasizing the need for responsible leaders to heed its message.
