In a bold move, a federal judge in Mississippi recently put the brakes on a Department of Health and Human Services rule aimed at combatting gender identity discrimination in healthcare. U.S. District Judge Louis Guirola sided with 15 conservative states that challenged the new rule, asserting that the Biden administration had overstepped its bounds with this latest endeavor.
The HHS rule, which was scheduled to take effect imminently, sought to expand protections for transgender individuals under existing anti-discrimination laws. However, Judge Guirola found that the administration had gone too far by using a recent Supreme Court ruling to justify their actions.
