In a blast from the past that has conservatives rolling on the floor with laughter, a 2021 tweet exchange between Speaker Mike Johnson and Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell is making the rounds on social media. It all started when Swalwell tweeted, desperately asking for an English translation of a floor speech by then-GOP Leader McCarthy. Johnson, quick on his feet (and apparently with a talent for languages), responded with the zinger, “You prefer it whispered to you in Chinese?” Ouch! But can you blame Johnson for poking fun at Swalwell’s past interactions with a suspected Chinese spy? I mean, come on, Swalwell, you can’t just forget about that little incident.

Now, let’s fast forward to the present, where Johnson has turned his wit and charm into real political power. After 22 days of intense negotiations and a whole lot of drama, the House of Representatives finally elected Johnson as its Speaker, and boy, was it a landslide victory. With unanimous support from his Republican colleagues, Johnson became the first GOP speaker to receive such overwhelming support since the legendary Speaker John Boehner. Talk about a win for the conservative party!
So let this be a lesson to all you aspiring politicians out there: if you want to make it to the top, you better have a sharp tongue and a sense of humor to match. Just ask Johnson, the newly crowned Speaker of the House and master of the political comeback. And as for Swalwell, well, maybe he should think twice before challenging someone like Johnson to a Twitter battle. Trust me, it’s not a fight he’s going to win.
