This strategic ambiguity seems tailored to appease both the radical left and moderate voters who might be looking for something less radical—like a cozy blanket in a tepid swimming pool.
The latest example of this behavior unfolded when a Detroit reporter asked Harris how she voted on California’s Proposition 36, a ballot measure dealing with crime. Instead of providing any real insight, Harris opted for a classic dodge. She claimed her ballot was en route back to California, a reassurance surely meant to quell any suspicions that she might be avoiding the issue altogether. Voters looking to understand her stance on critical issues were left with her signature vagueness.
Political pundit Alex Thompson of Axios opined that Harris’s continuous evasion of specific questions serves a clear purpose. Her refusal to shed light on where she stands on key issues suggests she is trying to straddle two competing worlds: the progressive left that adored her when she raced toward the nomination and the centrists who might be put off by her past liberalism. Harris’s complete lack of transparency on various issues makes her appeal to both sides seem more like a desperate game of hide-and-seek. Whether it’s her flip-flopping on the death penalty, which she won’t confirm or deny, or her unsure stance on amnesty for “Dreamers,” voters are presented with a puzzling array of mysteries. It’s as if the administration is pushing a magic show, only this time the rabbit in the hat is a tangled web of contradictory opinions that most Democrats can’t seem to decode either.
Let’s not forget her shifting positions on more pressing issues, such as fracking and gun buybacks. A spokesperson’s vague claims that she no longer supports certain policies leaves voters scratching their heads and wondering who they can actually believe. If the vice president does lose the race, the blame game is bound to ensue, leading to an inevitable chorus singing about how a lack of clarity doomed a campaign with a candidate who can’t seem to decide which way is up. Meanwhile, President Biden’s name will likely be dragged through the mud for supporting someone whose own past liberal record could scare off potential voters.
As the election approaches, the glaring absence of real answers should serve as a flashing red light for any voter trying to decipher what Harris really believes. Unless she decides to pour concrete on her waffling and provide voters with the substance they deserve, her campaign could continue to look like a political house of cards, ready to collapse at the first gust of tough questions.
