House Republicans are furious with Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) after she voted to remove former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his position. This betrayal has put her in the crosshairs of her fellow GOP members, who are not taking her decision lightly. It seems that Mace’s vote was even more shocking because she had been a close ally of McCarthy’s in the past, unlike the other Republicans who voted against him. The anger towards Mace is so intense that some Republicans are considering retribution against her.
Mace, however, is not backing down. She has been unapologetic about her choice and even took the opportunity to fundraise off of it. In an appearance on Steve Bannon’s podcast, she asked for donations because “they are coming after me.” This move has only intensified her colleagues’ anger towards her. It’s ironic that Mace criticized Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) for using his efforts to block McCarthy from becoming speaker to fundraise back in January, but now she is doing the same thing.
The consequences for Mace’s vote could be severe, especially since she does not have broad support within the party. One lawmaker noted that she has “no coalition of support.” Even though Gaetz has shown his support for her and gave her the nickname “Maverick Mace,” this move could still come back to haunt her if she wants to continue advancing her political career.
Mace’s future is now uncertain. While the vote she made is popular among conservative voters, if House Republicans continue to hold this grudge, her road ahead may become more challenging. It remains to be seen if she can bounce back from this or if her decision will have lasting consequences.
