Almost half of Republican voters said they would back Donald Trump's third presidential bid if he were to run in 2024.
A recent Morning Consult poll revealed that almost half of Republican primary voters plan on supporting Trump, as opposed to 33% who said that they would vote for Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida. Mike Pence, the former vice president, came in third with 9% of electoral support.
The poll, which was conducted just over a year from the start of the presidential primary season, comes as several potential candidates continue to explore a White House run. Trump has been the only candidate so far to officially announce his intentions.
Despite DeSantis' lack of formal statements regarding his potential presidential run in 2024, he is still a popular choice among Republican voters. He and Trump regularly alternate at the top of the polls, and the former has beaten the latter in head-to head contests.
The field of potential Republican presidential candidates is expected to grow in the coming months. Some of the prominent individuals who are expected to join the race include former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, and Ted Cruz, the senator from Texas.
The Morning Consult poll was conducted by the firm from January 6 to 8. It had a margin of error of plus/minus 2 percentage points.
