Nikki Haley, the former UN ambassador and rising star in the Republican Party, had a moment of embarrassment at a campaign event in New Hampshire. As she was about to answer a little girl’s question, Haley couldn’t help but compliment the young rallygoer on her campaign hat. The girl politely thanked her and then dropped a bombshell: “One of your guys gave it to me for free.”

It’s not every day that a presidential candidate gets caught off guard like that. But this incident didn’t seem to faze Haley too much. She’s been on the campaign trail with New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu, who himself considered running for president but ultimately decided against it. Despite the uphill battle she faces, Haley’s numbers have been improving as the field of candidates narrows.
Multiple polls have shown Haley in second or third place, both nationally and in key primary states like Iowa and New Hampshire. In fact, a recent poll from The Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa had Haley tied with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis at 16 percent each. That’s an impressive showing for someone who hasn’t even officially announced her candidacy.
Of course, none of this seems to matter when it comes to former President Donald Trump. He still commands a massive lead in the polls, with 43 percent of the vote in the same Iowa poll. It’s clear that Trump’s influence within the Republican Party is as strong as ever. But that doesn’t mean Haley should be counted out just yet. She’s got the charm, the experience, and now, the ability to make awkward moments on the campaign trail.
