Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips is challenging President Joe Biden in the 2024 presidential election. Phillips, known for his bow ties and personality, ran due to worries about Biden's age and electability and the Democratic field's lack of plausible options.
Phillips told CBS News' Robert Costa that the 2024 election should focus on the future. When asked if he was running for president, he said "Yes. I must. I think President Biden has done much for our nation. It's not about history. Future-focused election. I won't rest. I'll speak out when data show an emergency next November."

Phillips has reached out to Ray Buckley, the Democratic Party Chairman, and begun hiring personnel to build a strong campaign in New Hampshire. He wants to launch his campaign strongly and make a mark in the early primary state.
Phillips supports "generational change" in the Democratic Party. He worries that Biden's probable candidacy could lead to a rematch with former President Donald Trump, who is rising in surveys. Phillips knows he must be fresh and imaginative to win the party's nomination and confront Trump in the general election.
Phillips' background in coffee, gelato, and distilleries gives him a unique viewpoint on the race. His charisma, ambition, and unique bow tie collection may not be enough to attract Democratic voters. Phillips' inclusion makes the 2024 Democratic primary more exciting.
