MSNBC host Rachel Maddow must be living in an alternate reality if her comments about President Joe Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race are any indication. Rather than face the facts surrounding his presidency, she has opted to elevate a man who seems more like a punchline than a pillar of patriotism. While claiming to be “blown away” by Biden’s supposed selflessness, it’s hard to ignore her blatant attempts to rewrite his tumultuous tenure, all in a desperate bid to uphold her narrative.
Maddow seems to believe that Biden’s decision to step back is not just significant, but is in fact the pinnacle of his service to America. Perhaps she forgot about the highest inflation rates in decades, skyrocketing crime rates, and the soured international relations that have turned America’s strength into a laughing stock on the global stage. But why let reality spoil a good story? According to Maddow, Biden’s withdrawal is not a reflection of his failing presidency but rather a monumental act of sacrifice, one that she claims will be remembered in the annals of history. It’s quite the theatrical performance, albeit one lacking any real substance.

In what could only be described as a twisted version of history, Maddow attributes Biden’s supposed success in navigating the COVID-19 pandemic as a shining achievement. The reality, however, is a far cry from Maddow’s version of events. Under his leadership, Americans saw ridiculous mandates, confusion over vaccinations, and a so-called recovery that left many still reeling, struggling to figure out how to pay for basic necessities. The claim that Biden delivered a “best recovery” is laughable, especially for those paying double for eggs.
Then there’s the idea that Biden’s presidency ended the “one disastrous term” of Donald Trump. It seems Maddow has conveniently forgotten that many Americans felt better off under Trump, who oversaw a booming economy before the pandemic struck. Biden’s unwillingness to accept he may not be the right person for the job demonstrates not just a lack of self-awareness, but a refusal to recognize that his presidency hasn’t lived up to the lofty expectations set by his supporters.
In Maddow’s world, Biden’s stepping aside is framed as an altruistic move to prevent another Trump presidency, but isn’t that just a touch dramatic? The implication that only Biden standing down can save the republic feels like a heady mix of arrogance and desperation. It has been suggested that he’s doing this for love of country; perhaps it’s more that he’s simply acknowledging the reality of his situation—his presidency is teetering on the edge of a rapidly declining approval rating that even his most ardent fans can’t ignore.
As Maddow waxes poetic about the “sacrifice” inherent in Biden’s decision, one has to wonder what she’ll say next. Perhaps she will insist that Biden deserves a gold medal for exercising basic political awareness. Until then, the rest of America will likely continue to shake their heads at the absurdity of it all, while quietly wishing for someone genuinely competent to lead the nation.
