Republicans Urge Manchin to Run for West Virginia Governor

Several Republicans are reportedly encouraging Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia to run for governor against Republican Attorney General Patrick Morrisey. According to insiders, about 20 wealthy Republicans have approached Manchin, urging him to challenge Morrisey. The West Virginia Republican Party quickly denounced these efforts, stating that they firmly support Morrisey as the gubernatorial candidate.

Manchin, who previously served as a Senator, announced that he would not seek reelection and would be leaving the Senate next year. This news came after early polls suggested that he would face a tough challenge from Governor Jim Justice if he decided to run again.

Patrick Morrisey, who lost to Manchin in the 2018 Senate race, has garnered the support of the West Virginia Republican Party and the Republican Governors Association. Both entities have expressed strong support for Morrisey’s candidacy, emphasizing his conservative values and his commitment to challenge the Biden administration’s policies.

One potential Democratic candidate for the gubernatorial race, Huntington Mayor Steve Williams, expressed doubts about the rumors surrounding Manchin’s possible entry into the race. Williams highlighted his conversations with Manchin and the senator’s support for his campaign, indicating that he does not believe Manchin would pursue a gubernatorial bid.

Manchin has not publicly addressed these reports, and it remains to be seen whether he will consider running for governor in West Virginia.
