The state of Texas is standing firm against the Biden administration’s latest border plans, calling it a “expensive Band-Aid on a gunshot wound.” Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham didn’t hold back, criticizing Customs and Border Protection’s proposal to build a massive processing facility in Laredo, Texas that would house 500 illegal immigrants. In a letter to CBP, Buckingham made it clear that spending tens of millions of taxpayer dollars on a facility for non-citizens is not the answer to the border crisis. Instead, she called for real federal leadership and improved facilities to address the underlying border issues.
Since President Biden took office, the number of encounters with unauthorized immigrants has skyrocketed to over 8 million, the highest in U.S. history for any three-year period. In response, Texas has taken matters into its own hands, bolstering its border security initiatives. Governor Greg Abbott even brought on a border czar and announced the construction of a permanent military base in Eagle Pass as part of Operation Lone Star. Texas has been proactive, taking control of areas previously overrun by cartel activity and smuggling and constructing its own state border wall.

Buckingham made it clear that Texas’ approach should serve as a model for the Biden administration to follow. Yet, instead of supporting Texas’ efforts, the administration has resorted to lawsuits and bureaucratic obstacles. According to Buckingham, without a change in the administration’s approach, the proposed processing center will have little impact on the border crisis.
In conclusion, Texas is taking decisive action to address the border crisis, but it’s clear that the state is fighting an uphill battle against the Biden administration’s policies. With the number of unauthorized immigrants entering the country at an all-time high, Texas is on the front lines, and it’s clear that it needs real support and leadership from the federal government to address this pressing issue.
