In what appears to be a bold new chapter in the wonderfully low-brow world of celebrity gossip, TMZ has decided to grace our nation’s capital with their illustrious presence. That’s right, folks! The same outlet that brought us breaking news of Kardashians’ hair changes and Bieber’s latest tattoo is now poised to take on Congress. It’s called TMZ DC, a noble mission comprising of three video warriors—Jackson, Jacob, and Charlie—on a quest to burst political bubbles, one cringy, up-close encounter at a time. One can’t help but wonder if their primary tool might be a selfie stick.
Now, in all fairness, if TMZ could keep their evident biases in check, this could turn into quite the political spectacle. But, we’d better brace ourselves for more footage of politicians being asked about their Disney World escapades, complete with bubble wands, instead of, say, anything remotely substantial. One can imagine the juicy headlines: “Senators Spotted Dining at DC’s Trendiest Spots! Are the Guac Prices Reasonable?”
For those of you secretly hoping TMZ might bring some much-needed balance to the media universe, you’d better strap in for more disappointment. It’s anticipated that they’ll go hard on certain political figures, finding every opportunity to expose them in the most unsubstantial ways while simultaneously treating others like their favorite fluffy pets. Meanwhile, true guerrilla journalists are out there asking questions that actually matter, like why certain politicians have intriguing nighttime company, or suspect business dealings. Something tells us TMZ DC won’t venture too far into such uncomfortable territory.
And lest we forget, amid all the frothy bubble wand coverage, there’s also juicy dirt being unearthed regarding some political figures. It’s almost Shakespearean—the political stage as a comedic opera where some are found navigating scandalous waters, quite literally, involving a yacht and potentially illegal financial dealings. Because who doesn’t love a good scandal involving campaign funds and questionable escapades?
As the curtain rises on TMZ DC, let’s prepare for what is sure to be an entertaining albeit superficial sideshow. Their cameras are primed and ready to dish out the intrigue of DC one bubble wand and quip at a time. Yet, the real substance, ladies and gentlemen, seems to lie not in gaudy queries but in the rumbles of true investigative reporting that’s still restless out there. At the very least, we could all use a good laugh while swiping through the antics of Washington’s high-profile cast.
