Former President Donald Trump has taken a commanding lead over President Joe Biden in a recent ABC/Washington Post poll, causing former Clinton advisor and ABC News host George Stephanopoulos to appear shellshocked during his report. Stephanopoulos reported that the poll was “just brutal for President Biden,” revealing that Biden was trailing Trump by seven points at 42 to 49 percent. Adding to Biden’s troubles was a record-low approval rating and the “deep skepticism” of his leadership within the Democratic Party, with just 36 percent of Democrats wanting Biden to be the party’s nominee while 56 percent preferred someone else.

Even the demographics that Biden carried in 2020, such as independent voters, have turned against him, opposing him by a margin of nine points. His support among Black voters has also plummeted, falling from +75 percent in 2020 to +35 percent currently. ABC News analyst Rick Klein stated during the report, “In modern politics, that is not the kind of number Democrats need to be victorious.” Klein went on to say that the race was shaping up to be “more about the incumbent President Joe Biden than it is about any of his challengers.”
While potential Republican challenger Florida Governor Ron DeSantis enjoyed a six-point lead over Biden, the poll indicated that Trump had a commanding 23-point lead over his potential competitor for the Republican nomination. With rising inflation and interest rates, voters are placing the blame for the poor economy squarely on Biden’s shoulders leading to his plummeting approval ratings.
In the upcoming election, Trump will certainly use his pre-Covid economy as a contrast to Biden’s poor handling of the economy during his tenure. While Marianne Williamson, a self-help guru, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., the nephew of President John F. Kennedy Jr. have thrown their hats into the ring for the Democratic Party’s nomination, neither is expected to hamper Biden’s reelection bid.
The poll leaves little room for doubt that Trump, with his impressive lead in the polls, is the top contender and stands a good chance of reclaiming his presidency in the upcoming election. The current state of Biden’s presidency is a cause of alarm for the Democratic Party, and it remains to be seen how they will alter their strategy to regain their lost ground.
