Video clips that surfaced from the Socialism 2026 / Marxism conference in Chicago have thrust a dangerous message into the national spotlight. The footage shows UC Santa Barbara associate professor Butch Ware telling activists that “the Democrats cannot be reasoned with. They must be destroyed,” urging listeners to “be ready for … war in the streets,” and even saying revolutionaries should be talking about “training with weapons.” Those lines are short, shocking, and they are now everywhere on social media.
What the video shows and why it matters
The clips, posted and reposted across platforms, come from panels at a four-day socialist gathering over Labor Day weekend. Ware — identified on his university faculty page as an associate professor of history — was speaking to an audience of activists. He attacked elected progressive figures as too tame and said the party establishment will “contain radicalism.” When a professor talks about “war in the streets” and weapons training, it stops being academic theater and starts to feel like an instruction manual for violence.
Campus speech versus public safety
Universities are supposed to be places for tough debate. They are not supposed to be launch pads for calls to violence, or safe havens for people who tell an audience to “get ready” for street wars. So far there has been no public statement from university officials about the remarks. Silence from administration only raises questions: will UCSB protect free speech, or will it protect students and the public from rhetoric that calls for destruction and training with weapons?
Political fallout and the Democratic dilemma
This is also a political problem for the Democrats. The clips make clear that a wing of the left is openly hostile to mainstream Democrats and to elections as the only avenue of change. Democratic leaders who celebrate the “big tent” should ask themselves if the tent includes people who preach destruction. Elected socialists like Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Senate nominee Abdul El‑Sayed have pushed for change through government; that’s how you fix potholes, fund schools, and actually help people. Fires in the street don’t pass budgets or fix trash collection.
What should happen next
Journalists should obtain the full recordings, timestamp the remarks, and press the university and conference organizers for answers. Law-enforcement and campus safety officials should at least review whether these comments crossed any lines that warrant investigation. And Democrats who hope to use radical energy without paying the political price should stop pretending that extremist rhetoric won’t come back to haunt them. Political movements are full of factions. But when one faction talks about training with weapons, the rest of us have a duty to call it out.
At the end of the day, free speech has limits when it becomes a roadmap to violence. The video clips are a wake-up call — not for the people who already watch the left closely, but for voters and officials who have been told to look the other way. If Democrats want the benefit of activist energy, they also inherit the risk when that energy turns toward threats and street fights. That’s not radical thinking; it’s common sense.
