Poll Shows GOP Prefers State Control Over Abortion Laws, Boosted by Trump Support

A recent poll conducted by Politico /Morning Consult revealed that the majority of Republicans support allowing states to make their own decisions about abortion. This support increased to three-fourths when respondents were informed that this was the position of former President Donald Trump. Additionally, the poll showed that independent voters also became more in favor of leaving abortion regulations to the states when they learned it was Trump’s stance.

Interestingly, even some Democrats expressed support for the idea that states should have the authority to determine abortion laws. However, their support dropped when they were made aware that this was Trump’s position. This trend highlights the influence Trump continues to have on the Republican Party and suggests that his approach to abortion could pay off without alienating anti-abortion members of the party.

The poll also demonstrated that there is significant backing for a more moderate approach to abortion among Republicans. Specifically, 54% of respondents indicated support for a federal ban on abortion after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with exceptions for cases involving rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Additionally, the poll showed widespread support for in vitro fertilization (IVF) within the general public and among Republicans, with 64% in favor of ensuring access to IVF procedures.

The poll, conducted from April 12 to 15, involved 1,993 registered voters and had a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points. These findings underscore the resonance of Trump’s position on abortion among Republicans and indicate that various conservative views on reproductive rights remain popular within the party.
